Join us in congratulating Helen MacDonald on her incredibly successful career at Caithness Glass

Helen MacDonald, born in Caithness, began her career on 2nd December 1974 as a trainee engraver at Caithness Glass in Wick, working under masters like Denis Mann and Paul Ysart. Her early years coincided with a major project engraving decanters for Scotland’s restructured local government, offering a steep learning curve.
After a decade in Wick, Helen transitioned to the Perth studio as assistant designer to Colin Terris, where she collaborated with Venetian master Franco Toffolo. This experience ignited her passion for integrating colour into her designs, a practice she continues today at the Crieff studio. Helen’s creative process involves conceptualising ideas brought to life by skilled artisans, emphasising the craftsmanship behind each handmade Caithness paperweight.
Her first independent designs, often featuring intricate carving, gained recognition among collectors. Notable series include Biblical scenes, Fairy Tales, and Dancers, with commemorative pieces created for royal figures and special events. Helen also explored large-scale cameo-carved works, like the Chrysanthemum Bowl, now housed in the Perth & Kinross Museum, and experimented with techniques such as Graal glass.
Helen served as a global ambassador for Caithness Glass, fostering connections with collectors worldwide, a role she continues through social media by assisting with inquiries about historical pieces. In celebration of her 50-year career, Caithness Glass is releasing a limited-edition paperweight inspired by her Dancers series. Helen remains actively involved in designing, inspired by the materials and craftsmanship that have defined her remarkable journey.
